Public Involvement

The Macon Water Authority provides opportunities for public involvement in issues that directly impact water quality, environmental stewardship, and other critical issues impacting the water industry.

The Amerson Plant and Javors Lucas Lake

The MWA Amerson Plant and Javors J. Lucas Lake were constructed with public access and public education in mind.  Amerson Plant tours are available every week day except Wednesdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., upon the direction of the Plant Operations Director.

Individuals or groups are asked to call ahead to reserve a time to tour, so the Authority staff can provide a tour guide, if needed.  

For more information or to schedule a plant tour at the Amerson Water Plant, or to request a speaker from water treatment to provide public information or a program for your group, citizens may contact the Authority at 478-464-5650.

The Lower Poplar and Rocky Creek Plants

Both the MWA Lower Poplar and Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facilities are available for public tours.  The Authority typically conducts an average of a dozen or so tours of these facilities each year, so individuals and groups have shown interest in visiting the MWA wastewater treatment facilities and learning more about the wastewater treatment process.  Guests are welcome to come out for plant tours; however, please call ahead so a tour guide may be provided or other accommodations may be made.

Amerson Water Works Park and Outdoor Education

The Macon Water Authority worked with organizers of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail to extend and connect it to the site where the old MWA Riverside Drive Water Treatment Facility once stood.  The grounds of the old treatment facility were cleared and transformed into a public park, which is known today as the Amerson Water Works Park, after being dedicated in early 2009, in honor of long-time MWA Chairman of the Board Frank C. Amerson, Jr.

The Macon Water Authority has partnered with New Town Macon and the Bibb County Board of Education/Public Schools to form an outdoor education program.  The outdoor education partnership targets 7th grade students for annual field trips.  In addition, the MWA and its partners are making plans to expand curricula and experiences for students in all grade levels and academic settings, using Amerson Water Works Park as the ideal site for the study and appreciation of natural resources through experiential learning.
