Anglers have been counting the days this winter until the Macon Water Authority (MWA) opens Javors Lucas Lake for public fishing in 2010. They won’t have to wait much longer.

The regular fishing season at Lucas Lake will begin the first weekend in March, and the schedule for public access will be similar to what the Authority had in place last year.

When the lake opens for fishing on March 4, it will remain open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., during the months of March and April.

During the months of May and June, the Authority will scale back this schedule to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with the same operating hours of 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The lake will be open on Monday, May 31, for the Memorial Day holiday as well.

The lake then will be closed during the months of July and August, though fishing will be allowed on Sunday July 4, for the Independence Day holiday.

The Authority then will re-open Javors Lucas Lake on weekends during the months of September and October, including Monday, Sept. 6, for the Labor Day Holiday. The lake will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during September and October, as the last day of the 2010 fishing season will be Sunday, Oct. 31.

Lucas Lake will be closed to the public during November and December, as well as during January and February of 2011.

The fees for gaining access to Javors Lucas Lake for fishing will remain the same this year as they were in 2009. The parking fee for those fishing from the shore is $5 per vehicle, but $10 for vehicles pulling a trailer with a boat. Gas powered boats are not allowed on Lucas Lake. Season passes are available for $100.

The annual MWA Kid’s Fishing Derby, one of the most popular public education and recreation events of the year for Macon/Bibb County and Middle Georgia anglers, will be held at Lucas Lake on Saturday June 5, 2010.
