Water Authority to host annual Kids Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake on Saturday, June 5

Event features awards for the biggest catch of the day by various age groups

Carter Collins, age 3, appears to be a little skeptical that he won the biggest catch of the day in the age 3 to 5 category during last year’s Kids Fishing Derby, held at the MWA’s Javors Lucas Lake.

The first Saturday in June is becoming known as the date of one of the most popular outdoor recreation events in Middle Georgia. On Saturday June 5, that tradition continues when the Macon Water Authority (MWA) will host the sixth annual Kids Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake – its 625-acre drinking water reservoir named in honor of the current MWA Vice Chairman.

The fishing begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the weigh-in at 11:30 a.m., when prizes will be awarded in four age group categories. Additional prizes and giveaways will be offered as well. If this year’s event is anything last years past, when as many as 500 guests have been in attendance, the fish will be biting while the grills are cooking. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and admission is free.

The fishing derby, or contest, is open to youth and children age 16 and under. Participants must be accompanied by an adult, who also may fish for free during the day. This event is held on one of the few days during the year that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources does not require a permit for fishing, with the intent to promote the sport as well as outdoor recreation among families.

The portions of Javors Lucas where the competition will be held – accessible via Broach Lane off of Upper River Road – will be stocked with catfish, bass, and bream, but guests must bring their own bait, tackle, poles and equipment. Academy Sports is again serving as the premier sponsor.

For more information on the Kids Fishing Derby or the regular fishing season schedule at Javors Lucas Lake, citizens can contact the MWA at 478-464-5650.
