MWA recognized with top industry awards

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) welcomed a special guest to its recent June Board Meeting, as Bill Zieburtz, President of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), was in attendance to hand out awards for outstanding performances by the utility’s personnel and facilities this year.

GAWP officials announced the winners of the industry’s 2016 Facility and Operator Awards during the Association’s Spring Conference held in Columbus, Georgia in late April. During the Authority’s June Meeting, Zieburtz complimented MWA water professionals not just for the outstanding job they have done this year, but also for their continual good work that is critical to the well being of the community and its citizens.

“We celebrate excellent performances by our water professionals as a way to salute the industry and what we provide,” says Zieburtz. “People trust that their water will be safe to drink, and even though what we do is under the radar, it is no less heroic.”

Zieburtz also noted that without quality drinking water and sewer services, a community such as Macon-Bibb County couldn’t thrive.

“Without the Macon Water Authority, there would be no hospital, no industry, no arts,” he says. “This community must have the Macon Water Authority, just as the Macon Water Authority benefits from the talents and skills of their staff, including these award winners.”

Zieburtz recognized MWA Water Plant Operator William Brown with the GAWP Top Water Plant Operator Award for the State’s District 5. In addition, the Authority’s Jarvis Fennelle received the same District 5 Top Op Award for wastewater plant operators.

The MWA also received accolades from GAWP for its facilities, including the coveted “Plant of the Year” Award for the Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant. Remarkably, says Zieburtz, this is the fifth time the Amerson Plant has won the water industry’s award for Best Operated Plant of the Year in Georgia, in the category for facilities with a capacity of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) or larger, since the facility opened in 2000. This is even more impressive when considering that Plant of the Year Award recipients are not eligible for recognition the year after winning.

The Amerson Plant also won a GAWP Gold Award for 100% permit compliance this past year, a tremendous feat when even things out of the Authority’s control can result in a permit violation, says Zieburtz. The MWA’s tap water also was judged as the “Best Tasting in Georgia’s District 5,” an award the Authority received in 2009 as well, when it went on to win the industry’s top honor for “Best Tasting Drinking Water in North America,” as designated by AWWA.

Rounding out the facility awards for the MWA this Spring was the GAWP Platinum Award for the Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facility. This year marked the 17th consecutive year the Rocky Creek Plant has received the industry’s award for 100% permit compliance. With that impressive record, the Rocky Creek Plant is one of only three such facilities in Georgia to have that many consecutive years without a permit violation, an extremely difficult and rare achievement, notes Zieburtz.
