During its December Meeting, the MWA honored Mr. Ed DeFore (pictured with his wife Pat) for his 46 years of public service as an elected official, which included 14 years on the Authority Board.

He’s a Hall of Famer, literally and figuratively, as reflected in a career that included athletic prowess and public service to Macon-Bibb County stretching across five decades. Included in a 46-year tenure as an elected official are 14 years on the Macon Water Authority (MWA).

Thus, the MWA honored Macon native Ed DeFore with a special proclamation during its December Meeting, to commemorate his “lifelong service to the residents of Macon-Bibb County,” as well as “dedicated and distinguished service as a Board Member of the Macon Water Authority.”

Mr. DeFore contributed to the success of the Authority as an appointed Member from 1992-1996, and again from 2006 to 2016. He first served on the Authority as a Representative of the Macon City Council and later became one of two Representatives, along with Bert Bivins, from the Macon-Bibb County Commission following consolidation.

Mr. DeFore was first elected to the Macon City Council in 1971, and served for 42 years, making him the longest serving council member in Macon’s modern history. Because of consolidation, he was elected in 2013 to represent District 6 on the Macon-Bibb County Commission for a term that concludes at the end of 2016.

In 1974, Mr. DeFore also was elected to the Bibb County Board of Education, serving until 1984, as the first Macon-Bibb public official to hold two public offices simultaneously.

Among the many local civic organizations he has served or supported include the Macon Rescue Mission, the Boys & Girls Club, the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the Mayor’s Fort Hawkins Commission and Disability Committee.
“I feel privileged to have been associated with the Macon Water Authority for 14 years,” says DeFore. “I was appointed by the Mayor as a City Council Representative from 1992 to 1996, and again from 2006 to 2012; and later, from 2013 to 2016, as a Representative from the Macon-Bibb County consolidated government.”

Mr. DeFore also is known for his athletic skills and advocacy for sports and recreation. After graduating from Lanier High School, he played professional baseball for three years. He was inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Bibb County Commission named the Bibb Sports Complex in his honor in 2007. In 2012, he received the Erk Russell Spirit Award from the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to sports in Macon and Middle Georgia.

In business, Mr. DeFore worked 23 years at Georgia Kraft, followed by time as an independent agent for Colonial Life Insurance. A lifelong resident of Macon, he and his wife Pat have been married for 66 years.

“I have enjoyed working with the late Chairman Frank C. Amerson, the present Chairman Sam Hart, all of the other MWA Board Members, and Executive Director Tony Rojas,” adds DeFore. “Mr. Rojas does an outstanding job in the leadership of the Macon Water Authority, which is evident in the numerous national recognitions and awards that are bestowed upon the Authority. I am proud to have been a part of this important Authority that ensures we deliver the best level of service to the customers of this great county and surrounding counties.”
