MWA 2022 Water Professionals Appreciation
May 2, 2022 by Chris Wood, Ph.D.

MWA employees enjoy a Food Truck Frenzy to celebrate Water Professionals Appreciation Day in Georgia, during National Drinking Water Week.
For most of us, when we turn on our faucets and we see water coming out, we don’t think about how that water arrived at our home. We also don’t worry about it being clean or safe to drink. That’s because of the work of water professionals such as those at the Macon Water Authority (MWA).
The MWA took a moment to recognize its employees on Water Professionals Appreciation Day on Monday May 2. This statewide day of recognition kicks off National Drinking Water Week – a celebration within the water industry organized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).
Locally, the MWA celebrated by inviting employees to “Pack Your Bag, It’s a Food Truck Frenzy.” The Authority brought in five food trucks from local eateries to serve employees lunch at the newly dedicated Herbert Dennard, Sr. Support Services Center.
“The annual Water Professionals Appreciation Day event honors our MWA ‘Water Heroes’ for their dedication and hard work in making our operations a success,” says Joey Leverette, MWA Executive Director. “MWA employees are our number one asset.”
The food truck vendors serving delicious treats to MWA employees on Water Professionals Appreciation Day included:
• Azalea’s Green Tomatoes
• Scott Boys Smokin’ BBQ
• Guitarras Mexican Grill
• PeeWee Bakery Sweets
• Street Eatz Burgers & Wings
According to the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), Water Professionals Appreciation Day honors those individuals and utilities who treat water, clean wastewater, and protect the waters of our state. The Georgia General Assembly passed a Resolution recognizing the first Monday in May as Water Professionals Appreciation Day.
According to GAWP officials, Water Professionals show up and function as the invisible force that keeps the water flowing, in addition to protecting Georgia citizens from water-borne illness. They play an essential role in maintaining the health and safety of the people and the environment in our state.
For more than 40 years, the AWWA and its members have celebrated National Drinking Water Week, which is May 1-7, 2022, as a way for both water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives.
