Sample MWA Rate Calculation

The typical residential water bill is based on service from a 5/8" customer meter. Rates vary slightly according to meter size, with base fees increasing with the size of the respective customer meter.

Customers now pay a fee of $7.50 for the base amount of service, as well as additional consumption charges that are billed at $1.52 per 100 cubic feet or CCF, up to 300 cubic feet, when each additional 100 cubic feet over that 300 cubic feet amount is billed at $1.62, for Macon/Bibb County residential water customers. A unit of 100 cubic feet of water is approximately 750 gallons.

As an example of rate calculations, since a typical family of four uses approximately 12,000 gallons of water per month, their subsequent average consumption would be 16 CCF. Thus, the average residential water customer in Macon/Bibb County is billed the $7.50 base fee plus $25.62 in consumption charges (the first 3 CCF at $1.52 each + the additional 13 CCF at $1.62 each, or $4.56 + $21.06 = $25.62), resulting in a total water bill of $33.12, once the $7.50 base fee is added to the consumption charges.

The sewer base fee for MWA residential customers in Macon/Bibb County is $5.00 per month. In addition, monthly sewer consumption fees for residential customers are billed at $1.61 per CCF for the first 3 CCF and $1.71 per CCF over 3 CCF of use. Residential sewer rates are based on the average consumption of a customer's lowest 8 months of usage within a 12-month period. So, if a typical family of four has an average consumption from last year’s 8 lowest months of approximately 12,000 gallons, or 16 CCF, the average residential sewer customer is billed the $5.00 base fee plus $27.06 in consumption charges [($1.61 x 3 CCF) + ($1.71 x 13 CCF) = $27.06], which equates to a monthly bill of $32.06 for sewer services.

In all, according to this example of average consumption for an MWA customer, a typical bill for monthly water ($33.12) plus sewer ($32.06) services for a customer in Macon/Bibb County would be $65.18.

The difference in service rates for commercial or industrial customers is that they do not pay on an average. Commercial and industrial customers pay according to their actual consumption or use of water or sewer services, which will be applied to each bill unless they indicate that they have a flow meter. In addition, the meter base fee for commercial accounts also changes according to the size of the customer meter.
