Are you prepared in case of an emergency?

Since we sometimes experience tropical storms, hurricanes, and winter snow and ice in Georgia, please consider putting together a Family Emergency Plan and Basic Ready Kit to make sure your family is prepared for emergencies and natural disasters. Before an emergency happens, sit down with your family and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you should go, and what you will do in the case of emergency. Keep a copy of your plan in your emergency Basic Ready Kit or other safe place everyone can access. Family Emergency Plans include a neighborhood meeting place, and out-of-neighborhood meeting place, and an out-of-town meeting place. Make sure you have contact information for all members of the family, including their respective names, date of birth, social security number, and important medical information. In addition, write down where each family members spends the majority of their time, especially the location and contact information of places of work and schools. As for a Basic Ready Kit, store one gallon of drinking water per person per day, for at least a three-day supply. Also store a can opener and non-perishable food for that many days as well. Additional items may include a radio; flash lights with extra batteries; a first aid kit; a whistle to signal for help; a face mask for filtering contaminated air; plastic sheeting or tarps and duct tape for shelter repairs; moist wipes, garbage bags and plastic bags for hygiene; tools or at least a wrench and pliers to turn off utilities, and local maps. More information on emergency preparedness is available online at or on the Ready Georgia website at
